Tomb Raider 2 (2025) is a reboot of the iconic action-adventure film series, inspired by the 2013 video game of the same name. Directed by Roar Uthaug, the film stars Alicia Vikander as a younger, more realistic version of Lara Croft. This version focuses less on fantasy and more on Laraβs physical and emotional journey as she transforms into a hero.
Lara Croft is a 21-year-old living in London, refusing to accept her missing fatherβs death and avoiding her inheritance. When she discovers clues about his last expedition, she sets off to a mysterious island off the coast of Japan to uncover the truth. There, she comes face-to-face with a shadowy organization called Trinity, searching for an ancient tomb with dark secrets.
As Lara fights for survival in the harsh wilderness, she battles the ruthless Trinity operative Mathias Vogel. Throughout her journey, she learns to rely on her instincts, strength, and determination. Her experiences on the island mark her transformation from an ordinary young woman into a fierce adventurer determined to continue her fatherβs legacy.
The film received mixed reviewsβcritics praised Vikanderβs performance and the grounded tone, but criticized the predictable plot. Despite this, Tomb Raider grossed around $275 million worldwide. A planned sequel was eventually canceled, and in 2022, Amazon acquired the rights to the franchise with plans for a full reboot, including a TV series and new film adaptations.
