Homefront 2ย is a first-person shooter developed by Dambuster Studios and published by Deep Silver, released in May 2016. Set in an alternate history where North Korea becomes a global superpower, the game takes place in 2029 Philadelphia, which has been occupied by the Korean People’s Army (KPA). Players assume the role of Ethan Brady, a new recruit in the Philadelphia Resistance, as they fight to liberate the city from the KPA’s oppressive regime.
The game’s narrative begins with Brady’s cell being attacked by the KPA, resulting in the death of all members except for Brady. He is rescued by Benjamin Walker, the leader of the national Resistance movement, who is subsequently captured by the KPA. The story follows Brady’s efforts to rescue Walker and ignite a revolution against the occupation. The game emphasizes guerrilla warfare tactics, including sabotage, ambushes, and propaganda, as players work to inspire the population to rise up against their oppressors.
The gameplay features an open-world environment divided into three districts: the heavily fortified Green Zone, the impoverished Yellow Zone, and the war-torn Red Zone. Players can modify weapons, craft explosives, and utilize a smartphone for reconnaissance. A four-player cooperative mode allows players to undertake missions together, enhancing the game’s strategic depth. โ
Despite its ambitious premise, the game received mixed reviews. Critics praised its immersive setting and the concept of urban guerrilla warfare but noted issues with repetitive missions and technical shortcomings. The open-world design was also critiqued for its segmented districts and lack of seamless exploration. โ
